JLPT Flashcards

Studying for the kanji and vocabulary section of the JLPT isn’t a whole lot of fun. You have plenty of hours behind the study desk to look forward to.

For level 4, you must know around 100 kanji and 800 words.

For level 3, you must know around 300 kanji and 1,500 words.

Flashcards make a great learning tool. As you probably know by now, you’ll have a lot of lonely hours behind the study desk. However, flashcards can make the learning process a lot more enjoyable. Used correctly and often, flashcards can help you learn hundreds of new words in days instead of weeks.

When it comes to studying for the vocabulary section of the JLPT most students make the mistake of focusing too much on Kanji. That is, they spend hours and hours memorizing individual Kanji characters. It is far more important to learn “Kanji vocabulary”. The vocabulary section will test your knowledge of words, not individual Kanji readings.

JLPT FLashcards

We have picked out 442 key words you must know for Level 3 and 4. These are words we believe students have the most trouble remembering. We have used pictures to represent the meaning of each word rather than using translations to make the learning process more effective and interesting. The pictures will help you to make strong associations with the Hiragana reading of each word.

We have a two step learning process with our flashcards

Step 1: Hiragana Flashcards

The focus of the Hiragana flashcards is to help you learn new words with correct “Hiragana pronunciation”. We these cards you would take your time with each flashcard and focus on the reading, and then pronounce the word aloud. You would make mental notes of words that have long vowels. They are the words students have the most trouble with.  The next step is to learn the Kanji for each new word.

Step 2:  Kanji Flashcards

The learning focus with the Kanji flashcards is  to cement the new vocabulary you have learned as well as learn the Kanji. As you progress with these cards you would make sure to focus on the Kanji rather than the picture. The picture is to help you recall the reading of the noun, adjective, verb and so on. You would want to focus on memorizing the Kanji. It is very easy to get lazy with flash cards. Remember they are a learning tool.
